Fabric, Foam, Frame: What Decides How Upholstered Seating Ages

Two upholstered Chairs sit next to each other in a catalog photo and look like the same Chair . One carries a noticeably higher quote. Two years later, one is still firm and square, and the other has a seat that sags and a frame that announces itself every time somebody sits down.

The difference is not the fabric pattern. It comes down to three things a product photo cannot show, and this is how we write them into a specification before we ever put a quote together.

The Three Things a Catalog Photo Can't Show You

Upholstered seating is the product line where a catalog photo is worth the least.

With a solid wood Table you can read the grain, count the joints, judge the thickness of the top. With a Modern Tufted Compressible Sectional Sofa, the photo shows you the silhouette, the colour, and nothing else. Everything that decides whether the piece is still comfortable in year five is sitting behind the fabric.

Three variables drive most of the variation in how upholstered seating ages: the fabric's tested abrasion performance, the construction of the foam, and the frame and spring system underneath. We will take each in turn.

First, one warning about the test buyers rely on most — the showroom sit.

A five-minute sit in a sample room tells you almost nothing about durability, because new foam is always firm. It has not been compressed a hundred thousand times yet. A seat built on cheap foam feels wonderful on day one and worn out by month eighteen. Judging a chair by how it feels when new is like judging a tyre by how it looks when new.

Fabric — Why "Rub Count" Is Never One Number

Ask a supplier how durable a fabric is and you will usually get a single number. Twenty thousand. Forty thousand. A hundred thousand. Ask which test produced it, and the conversation tends to stall.

There are two abrasion tests in common use, and their numbers are not interchangeable.

Martindale (ISO 12947) rubs the fabric in a figure-of-eight pattern against a standard wool abradant and records the cycles until the yarn breaks down. Wyzenbeek (ASTM D4157) rubs a cotton duck abradant back and forth in a straight line and counts double rubs. Different motion, different abradant, different failure point. A fabric rated at 30,000 Martindale cycles and one rated at 30,000 Wyzenbeek double rubs have not been measured the same way, and no multiplier converts one into the other.

For a sense of where fabrics sit, our own reference points look like this. Residential upholstery is usually specified somewhere around 20,000 to 25,000 Martindale cycles. Contract and hospitality work generally starts around 30,000 and runs to 50,000. Heavy-use public seating — an airport, a busy hotel lobby — is usually specified at 80,000 and above. Those are procurement conventions, not legal requirements, and no standard says a chair is non-compliant below a particular number. They are a way to compare fabrics that were tested the same way, not a pass mark.

Abrasion is also only one of four things that matter in a fabric, and it is the one buyers ask about. Stain resistance is a treatment rather than a weave. Lightfastness is how the colour holds up beside a window. Pilling is what makes a fabric look old before it is worn out. A fabric that survives 100,000 rubs can still fade, stain, and fuzz. When we specify fabric we ask for the abrasion figure and the test method, the cleaning code, and any topical finish, because the number on its own tells you the least.

Foam — Density, ILD, and the Sandwich Trick

Foam has two numbers that buyers constantly merge into one. They measure completely different things.

Density is measured in kilograms per cubic metre. It tells you how much material is in the foam, and it is the better predictor of how long that foam will keep its shape. Low-density foam compresses, loses resilience, and stops standing up. ILD, sometimes written IFD, measures firmness — the force needed to compress the foam by a quarter of its thickness. A high-density foam can be soft. A low-density foam can be firm. Density is about lifespan. ILD is about feel. Ask for both, or you will be given whichever one sounds better on the day.

For contract and hospitality seating, our working convention is 35 to 45 kg/m³. That is a convention rather than a regulation — no law states that a sofa cushion must reach a particular density — but it is the band that separates foam that survives a hotel lobby from foam that survives a spare bedroom.

Now the part that decides most disputes and almost never appears in a quote.

Sandwich foam. On the spec sheet the line reads "high-density foam." Inside the seat, the top layer is high-density foam and the core beneath it is cheaper, lower-density foam bonded to it. The seat feels right in the showroom because your hand meets the good layer first. Compress it a hundred thousand times and the core gives way while the surface still reads as premium. It is one of the most common substitutions in upholstered furniture, and it is invisible in a photograph.

The fix is a single line in the specification: single-pour foam, uniform density through the cushion. That is a sentence a factory cannot quietly reinterpret. CertiPUR-US is a voluntary certification covering foam emissions and content. It is worth asking for where it matters, but it certifies the foam rather than the cushion, and it does not state the density. Read the specification, not only the label.

The Frame — What Actually Holds the Seat Up

Fabric and foam get the questions. The frame decides whether there is anything left to attach them to.

A frame that lasts is built from kiln-dried hardwood — not green timber, and not softwood offcuts. Kiln drying matters because wood that reaches assembly wet will keep moving as it dries out in your building, and a frame that moves pulls its own joints open. We hold frame stock at a controlled moisture content before it goes into assembly, the same logic we apply to panels in a Cabinet carcass.

Joints are the next line of defence. Frames that survive ten years are corner-blocked, glued, double-dowelled and screwed. They are not stapled. Staples hold a frame together long enough to ship it. They do not hold it together long enough to sit on it for a decade.

Springs come in three tiers, and the tier is the clearest single signal of what a seat was built for.

  • Elastic webbing — a woven band stretched across the frame. Lowest cost, fine for occasional use, and the first thing to sag.
  • Sinuous springs — zig-zag steel wire clipped to the frame. The standard for most mid-market seating, and perfectly serviceable for normal household use.
  • Eight-way hand-tied springs — coils tied in eight directions with twine. The labour is in the tying, and it is the specification behind seating that still feels right after heavy daily use.

Where a project needs third-party evidence rather than a description, the relevant standards sit at the whole-seat level. ANSI/BIFMA X5.4 covers public and Lounge seating, and it is distinct from X5.1, which is the standard for ordinary office chairs — so a report citing X5.1 for a lounge piece is not the report you asked for. On the European side, EN 16139 covers non-domestic seating and splits it into general use and severe use, the latter written for the kind of traffic an airport or a transit lounge produces. A Mesh Swivel Chair and a Solid Wood Dining Chair are not tested against the same clause, and a supplier who sends one report to cover everything has not read their own standard.

The frame is also the part that fails in year three rather than month three. It does not arrive broken. It arrives quiet, and then starts to tell you about itself.

The Flammability Rule Most Suppliers Read Wrong

Upholstered furniture sold into the United States sits under a federal flammability rule, 16 CFR Part 1640, and it is routinely described in ways that are simply wrong.

The rule took effect on 25 June 2021, with the labelling requirement following on 25 June 2022. It references the California test method CAL TB 117-2013.

The first thing most people get wrong: this is a smoulder test, not an open-flame test. The ignition source is a cigarette, not a flame. Upholstery that would fail a match test can still pass 16 CFR 1640, which is why the rule does not replace the older open-flame expectations some buyers assume it covers.

The second thing: it tests components, not the finished chair. The four components are the fabric, the barrier, the filling and the base. There is no single pass that certifies a whole sofa. A supplier who says "our sofa is 16 CFR 1640 certified" is describing the process loosely at best. What exists is a component-level test record and a label.

The third thing, and the one that surprises buyers most: the rule does not require flame-retardant chemicals to be added to the foam. Compliance can be reached by placing a suitable barrier layer between the fabric and the filling, so the foam never needs a chemical treatment to pass. Furniture made without added flame retardants is not non-compliant furniture.

The label itself is prescribed. It carries the words "Complies with U.S. CPSC requirements for upholstered furniture flammability." It has to be permanent, printed in English on the front, black text on a white background, and no smaller than one eighth of an inch. A hangtag is not a label. A label tucked inside the cushion under the seat, in a language the end user cannot read, is not a label either.

One exemption is worth flagging, because it gets misread in both directions: Outdoor Furniture is exempt from 16 CFR 1640. That is a real exemption for genuinely outdoor products, not a route for moving an indoor sofa through customs as an outdoor one.

In Europe the equivalent framework is the EN 1021 series. EN 1021-1 uses a cigarette as the ignition source. EN 1021-2 uses a match-equivalent flame. The UK adds BS 5852 for ignition-source testing and BS 7176 for non-domestic seating, where the required performance scales with the risk category of the environment the furniture sits in.

How We Write an Upholstery Spec Sheet

Everything above becomes one document before we quote an upholstered order. It is the seating equivalent of the eight points we ask for on a cabinet program and the five report checks we run against a BIFMA claim, and it exists so that nothing important is left to a photograph.

Our standard upholstery brief asks for:

  1. Fabric — brand or reference, the abrasion figure with the test method named, the cleaning code, and any topical finish.
  2. Foam — density stated as single-pour, uniform density, with the target band in kg/m³.
  3. Frame — timber species, moisture content at assembly, and whether the frame is corner-blocked and glued.
  4. Springs — webbing, sinuous or hand-tied, stated by SKU.
  5. Seams and stitching — stitch length and tolerance, because a wavy seam is the first thing a customer sees.
  6. Test expectations — which standards apply to the destination market, and who is expected to generate the reports.
  7. Packaging — how the piece is protected against moisture, and how it is stacked in the container.
  8. Target market, because it changes the answers to the six points above it.

Written down, these are boring. That is the point. Boring specifications are what keep a program out of a claims conversation six months after the container lands.

How to Compare Two Quotes That Look the Same

Two quotes for the same chair arrive on two pages with two totals, and the buyer is asked to pick one.

The useful move is to stop comparing totals and start comparing specifications. Take the eight lines above and make them a single table. Fill in what each quote states. The rows left blank in one column are the places where that supplier is betting you will not ask — and in upholstered seating the blank rows are almost always foam construction and frame joints, because those are the two places where cost can be removed quietly without changing how the chair looks in a photo.

Once both columns are complete, the conversation changes. A higher number with a tied spring system and single-pour foam is not the expensive option. It is the option with fewer unknown rows.

The right answer also depends on where the piece is going. A Rotating Mesh Office Chair in a co-working space is used eight hours a day, five days a week. A lounge chair in a hotel room is used twenty minutes at a time by guests who will never sit in it again. A retail sofa is bought on appearance and used lightly. Specifying the same construction for all three is not thrift; it is confusion about who is going to sit on the thing.
