PE (polyethylene) rattan. The synthetic wicker that's replaced natural rattan in 95% of the market. Flat PE rattan is cheaper but feels artificial to the touch. UV-stabilized PE adds roughly 8–12% to the material cost but prevents the rattan from turning brittle and cracking after one summer. Worth it.

Steel. The budget option. Heavier than aluminum (freight penalty), rusts if the powder coating chips, and requires a thicker gauge to match aluminum's strength. Steel works for fire pits and low-cost chairs where weight isn't a dealbreaker and the price point is the primary consideration. For anything going to coastal or high-humidity markets, skip it or spec stainless steel.

Wood. Teak is the gold standard for outdoor tables — naturally oil-rich, weather-resistant, ages to a silver-grey patina. Acacia is the mid-tier alternative: harder than teak but needs annual oiling. Eucalyptus is the entry point, widely available and affordable but shorter-lived. The wood source matters: ask for FSC certification or at minimum documentation of legal harvest origin. EU importers increasingly need EUTR compliance paperwork for timber products.

Cushions and fabric. The fastest way to spot cheap outdoor furniture: the cushions. Quick-dry foam wrapped in solution-dyed acrylic or olefin fabric is what commercial-grade outdoor seating uses. Polyester cushion covers fade and mildew within a season. Removable, zippered covers with machine-washable fabric are standard for European retail. Quality Standards That Actually Matter for Outdoor Furniture

BIFMA applies to North American commercial and contract projects. The testing protocols for BIFMA are more demanding than residential standards — higher weight loads, more cycle testing on mechanisms. Hotel and restaurant buyers will ask for BIFMA compliance in their RFQs.

GCC / SASO covers the Middle East. Saudi Arabia requires SASO certification for imported furniture; other Gulf states have their own conformity assessment programs. Salt spray testing (ASTM B117) is the practical test that matters more than any certificate number. It simulates years of coastal exposure in a few hundred hours.
